QUIET PRIDE – WHAT IS IT AND WHY DO I PRACTICE IT?

Quiet Pride is not a well-known term within the LGBTQIA+ community – I for one was inspired by the works of Skylar Brook on Redbubble – but it is a term made to represent products that are safe to be purchased by closeted queers. Generic words, such as ‘bubblegum’ and ‘retro’, may be used in the title or description of a product instead of LGBTQIA+ terminology to avoid leaving a record of one’s sexual or gender orientation. Furthermore, the design itself should be subtle – for example, flag colours can be incorporated into decorative products without it being obvious to the wrong people.

Not everyone in the community wants to stand atop a roof and announce their queerness – and that is okay! Quiet Pride practices welcome those that want to keep their identity/sexuality under wraps for the time being while still being able to enjoy their flag(s).

Another reason why a person in the community may want to evade overtly queer-named products is the homophobic parent(s)/carer(s) that may see the receipts and in turn harm the individual. Quiet Pride can – if not stop – lower the chances of this happening so there is really no reason not to do it.

Lastly, those in the LGBTQIA+ community can recognise the common flag colours in these items so it is an effortless way to let others know that you are one of them. I think it is wonderful that such a simple gesture can bring solidarity between a highly stigmatised group of people, while still protecting oneself from said stigma.

As such, I practice and highly recommend fellow sellers/artists Quiet Pride as it is an easy way to include those that aren’t ready to come out of the closet just yet.
